Road Cycling

Pedal riverside and take in expansive views across the basin, exploring the 67 miles of paved trails. Take the kids for a meandering ride around Kennewick’s Clover Island, or if you’re feeling intrepid, cross the causeway and pick up the 23-mile Sacagawea Heritage Trail to experience the Tri-Cities shore to shore. Cross the river and ride to Sacajawea State Park and check out the interpretive center, or branch off at the Interstate 182 Bridge and venture further upstream where the trail runs out at the USS Triton Sail Park, where you can discover a Cold War-era submarine conning tower.

Mountain Biking

Adventure awaits mountain bikers. Check out State Patrol Trails, a TK-trail network in south Kennewick with many moderate-to-challenging routes featuring appealing terrain elements. Or log some mileage on the slopes of Rattlesnake Mountain northwest of West Richland toward Hanford Reach. In the Badger Mountain Trail System, discover the Skyline Trail’s unparalleled views of Tri-Cities and the greater Columbia Basin. In town, try Chamna Natural Preserve’s grassy Peninsula Loop or trek over to uninhabited Bateman Island for chance encounters with riverine wildlife. Outside of town, try White Bluffs, Juniper Dunes Wilderness or Wallula Gap for a more rugged experience of the region’s signature sagebrush steppe habitat and abundant wildflowers in spring.

Bike Races

Meet your competitive edge—or spectate—at the IRONMAN 70.3 Washington Tri-Cities triathlon in September; and in May, check out the Rage in the Sage Duathlon, a 2.5-mile run with a 10-mile mountain bike leg on the gorgeous Kiona Vineyards and Winery grounds in Benton City. Youth ages 7–12 can join the Titanium Man Junior Triathlon. Also in May, the Inland Empire Century provides ride options ranging from 25 to 100 miles, catering to various cycling enthusiasts.

If tasting regional wines is also on your itinerary, sip and roll with Kickstand Tours for half-day e-bike excursions or Red Mountain Trails for pedal bike tours into the heart of Red Mountain wine country and the Rattlesnake Hills.

1. Columbia Park (Kennewick)
Columbia Park in Kennewick features miles of flat, paved riverfront trails, perfect for leisurely rides and family outings. The 4.5-mile Columbia Park Trail, ideal for cycling, follows part of the former U.S. Highway 410, offering a scenic and relaxing route with a touch of local history. Along the way, riders can stop at benches to rest, enjoy a picnic on the grass, or let the kids play at one of the park’s playgrounds.
