Farmers Markets Accept SNAP & Other Benefits
Tri-Cities farmers markets accepting SNAP benefits and other assistance programs make fresh, local produce more accessible to all community members.
This initiative supports food security, boosts the local economy, and promotes a more inclusive, sustainable food system.
The Tri-Cities area of Washington State boasts a vibrant network of farmers markets, offering residents access to fresh, locally grown produce and artisanal products. These markets serve as vital hubs for community engagement and sustainable food practices.
Accessibility in local food systems is essential for creating a more equitable and sustainable community. Ensuring that all members can participate in and benefit from our local farmers markets is a vital step towards achieving this goal.
Oh SNAP!
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, plays a significant role in making fresh, nutritious food accessible to families facing financial constraints. The acceptance of SNAP benefits at farmers markets is a game-changer for many in our community.
How SNAP/EBT Works
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families. SNAP benefits are distributed through Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which function like debit cards. At participating farmers markets, SNAP recipients can use their EBT cards to purchase fresh, healthy food directly from local farmers. This system makes transactions simple and discreet.
SNAP Market Match Program
The SNAP Farmers Market Match program enhances accessibility by offering additional funds for fruit and vegetable purchases. This initiative effectively stretches food dollars, making healthy choices more attainable for SNAP recipients. For every dollar spent on produce at participating vendors, the program provides a matching dollar, up to $50. To identify participating vendors, look for their distinctive sign at the market.
Participating Farmers Markets
The Pasco Farmers Market and Richland Farmers Market both participate in the SNAP and Market Match programs, making fresh, local produce more accessible to our community. The Pasco Farmers Market operates every Saturday, May through October, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 109 S. 4th Avenue in Peanuts Park, while the Richland Farmers Market is open every Friday, June through October, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at at the roundabout on Lee Blvd and The Parkway in Richland, WA.
Benefits for Consumers and Local Farmers
We encourage everyone, whether you use SNAP benefits or not, to visit and support these markets. By doing so, you're not only accessing fresh, locally grown food but also contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable food system in our community.
The acceptance of SNAP and other benefits at our local farmers markets is more than just a transaction – it's a commitment to community health, local agriculture, and social equity. By supporting and expanding these initiatives, we're building a stronger, healthier, and more connected Tri-Cities.
